Morning all.
Did more pullups, chin ups and abs yesterday, then a 5k this morning at a 13:32 pace. Felt more like I should have had swim fins on. 72 and HUMID!
September 14, 2020 at 8:11 am #140657Great job @10dedfish! You’re coming along “swimmingly!”

I had to google cherry point, ‘cause I never heard of it
According to google, I’m 8.5 hours away by car. Is that where that pirate race weekend is??? I remember you talking about that a looooong time ago! I wanted so much to run that one
Yeah, I had a bothersome lower leg thing again. Ended up stopping training 7 weeks altogether, which was ROUGH because it was around April, when I was cooped up indoors still from Covid. Who ever heard of a PE teacher sitting down all day at a computer while working? And then to add insult to injury…literally…my leg started up. Not sure if it was shin splints or another stress fracture. Eventually went to chiro while I waited for orthopedic appointment, but by the time the ortho app rolled around my leg was feeling better. But my knee was bothering me too
Doc says that is patellar tendinitis. But I don’t buy it. I think it’s something else. It just never ends! Age sucksI’m taking it slow, but I’m back to running 5K’s pretty much every other day. Sometimes I sprinkle in a speed run. Usually on those humid days, because they’re easier
But my pace is a lot slower than usual. I can’t worry about that. I just want to up my distance, and like you, my goal is to run a half again.

And, congratulations on the new job! Happy to see things are better for you. I’m sure leaving wasn’t an easy decision, but all that stress is killer. Literally.
Good luck with the new gig
September 16, 2020 at 6:22 am #140753I don’t really want to jinx it, since I broke my ankle 7 years ago my relationship with running has been so on-again off-again. I started training and had a medical issue and had to stop. I started training and suffered insomnia and had to stop. I started training and threw out my back and had to stop. I started training and a pandemic occurred and my work changed so much that I didn’t have time for anything but working.
Now that I’ve gotten “used to” the pandemic and it’s affect on being a professor, I’m actually able to carve out more time in my mornings that I would normally be over-working in my office. Since it’s been 7 years since I had a solid base, I’m working on building a solid base. It’s rough. I gained weight in the meantime and am out of shape so not only am I not running as far but I’m not running as fast as I used to. But I’m not letting any of that bother me.
It’s hard to find “base building” plans out there, so I’m just running two days in a row, then one day off for biking or yoga or walking (or a combination). I’m also starting to bike to work on my days not running. I’m doing whatever I can to avoid having another catastrophe derail my plans. Thankfully, the running makes me feel good again, rather than feeling like a chore as it has at times in the past. And whenever weather comes and disrupts my 2 on / 1 off plan, I remind myself that the most important thing is how I deal with coming back after more days off than I would have wanted. I’m getting there!
September 16, 2020 at 6:56 am #140754@lemontwist you are doing great! It doesn’t matter how far or fast, what matters is doing something, anything. There are those of us here who are super speedy at 7 – 8 minute miles. There are those of us here who are happy with 13 – 15 minute miles, using the run/walk method. There are those of us here who can only walk, and that’s okay! You’ve had a lot of setbacks but it’s great that you are doing anything you can, and taking it carefully so you don’t get injured again. You keep doing what you are doing and we will cheer you and celebrate you!
September 16, 2020 at 7:31 am #140755@lemontwist keep up the good work! Dont worry about speed, you’re lapping everyone on the couch!
Continuing with my cross training, running on M/W/F and calisthenics on off days. Today was a run day, 3.1 at a 13:21 pace. Little faster than the last few!
September 16, 2020 at 3:18 pm #140767Oooooooh, @lemontwist…..I hear ya
Injuries and weight gain. Exactly where I’m at right now. You try to get back at it, but you’re taking it easy because of those previous injuries. Yet, you’ve gained weight so the pounding and pressure on those old injuries has increased and just puts more strain on your body when it’s already weak from taking time off and not working out. Talk about kicking someone when they’re already down.
It’s like a cruel joke. A bad cycle that’s so hard to break.
You’re not alone.
Keep up the fight! Lord knows I am, although my body is questioning my sanity with each run
September 16, 2020 at 3:21 pm #140768So I got a quick workout in today. Maybe a half hour or so. Some resistance stuff.
Can’t say it felt good while I was doing it. I haven’t exercised in over a month, so I had to decrease my weights. But it did feel amazing when I was done. But only because the torture was over
Mama didn’t raise no quitter
LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOSeptember 16, 2020 at 3:25 pm #140770Good job @10dedfish and @missingwdw! You guys are doing great, seriously!
September 16, 2020 at 3:25 pm #140771AnonymousInactiveXPI’ve had 3 ACL replacements and 2 meniscus operations on my left knee alone. My running days are over and I miss them. That said, I just bought a bike and I do want to get into swimming as well.
September 17, 2020 at 5:23 am #140776Heading out now for my run
100% humidity
WHHHHYYYYYYYY?????
September 17, 2020 at 8:06 pm #140855@Mr-TomMorrow
Wowza! That’s a lotta work on one knee!
Exercise bike are awesome. If I couldn’t run, that’d be my next move. They’re great for rehab as well.
Can’t go wrong there
If I wanted to swim for exercise, I’d have to go back for lessons
I can swim, but not well. And I don’t ever really try to improve. I’m mostly in the ocean, so that’s pretty much just treading water and jumping over, or diving under the waves. No real swimming.
So I guess it’ll be running for me until my knees scream, HEY STUPID! I SAID ENOUGH!
September 18, 2020 at 6:40 am #140862Thanks for the encouragement and kind words everyone! It finally stopped raining in Chicagoland so I’ve been back in the groove for a week and it’s felt great. I’ve also signed up for some more virtual races which I think will help with my motivation.
September 18, 2020 at 10:58 am #140881I’ve been trying to get a short run in every couple days on the treadmill. That’s my only option with kids. I’ve been trying to do at least 30 minutes, sometimes it’s less if I can’t stop hearing “mom, mom, mom!” I’m hitting about 15 minute miles but it’s tough. I’m more of a jog, then blast it, then jog again, then blast it. I am also doing my HIIT class 4 times a week. It’s a relatively new “Fitness craze” that a gal in my tiny town took on. It’s the only fitness class in the town. It’s call Pound and it involves cardio and strength training while using special weighted drumsticks. I love it. It’s a really aggressive type class so it’s great for the mornings to get moving. As you can see in my attached picture, my hands are taking a beating. But it’s awesome anyway.
I’m hoping that by November, I can run the Jingle Bell 5k for juvenile diabetes. As far as I know they still plan to have it. crossing fingers. Otherwise there is the Frostbite 5k in January.
Gotta just keep going. “THIS IS THE WAY”
I totally missed the addition of these and I’m squeeeeee about it!!
