i saw tons of people filling up their mugs at restaurants like Restaurantasaurus and Backlot Express. No one checks and people bring their mugs and fill them there.

Interesting. I thought they had RFID now so you couldn’t do that. That’s how it works at Universal, all of the drink stations at the parks have RFID so they know you have a resort mug not a park mug. However, any place with a soda fountain will fill your resort mug with ice and water for free, which is awesome!

Not a stupid question. They are usable across all Disney resorts, all of WDW and including Vero Beach. So you can combine a beach stay with a WDW stay and not have to purchase a separate mug. The use does not cross into the parks however. That being said, you can take any leftover drink at a restaurant and pour it into your mug, “to go”, for ease of carrying. We do that all the time. That way we can buy one large drink between the two of us, for a whole lot less than two regulars, and have plenty leftover for the mug at the end.

Thanks! So there’s no refill station for the resort mug at the parks, does that include the water parks? That’s a great idea to use it as a “to go” cup. Jungle juice for the road? Yes please! Trying to decide if a resort mug will be worth it for us next trip.

That’s correct, not at the water parks either. I’m not sure where your drink stations are at OKW in relation to the bus stop but we have found that has a direct bearing on how much the mug gets refilled. At Values or Moderates, at least where we’ve stayed, it’s extremely convenient to fill in the morning before heading to the buses, and equally so when returning. However at AKL the drink area (counter service) was way in the back, nowhere near as convenient. Hence we didn’t fill as much when we stayed there. But at our regular resorts, it’s not uncommon for us to fill 5 or 6 times a day! Morning, afternoon break coming back, going back to the park after break, and evening for a nightcap when returning home. And that doesn’t include any meals we may eat there! So for us, it more than pays for itself in one day alone.

I wish people wouldn’t do that. That’s what ruins it for the other folks and the reason they started the chips in the resort mugs in the first place. Taking leftovers of something you already paid for, that’s one thing, but completely cheating the system and taking something totally without paying, that’s another.

Even though we no longer purchase a dining plan, we do still purchase the rapid fill mugs. It’s sort of become part of our WDW experience. We use them when we head back to the resort mid-afternoon and in the evenings. We also have taken them from resort to resort when eating a quick service meal. Plus, at the end of the trip we have souvenirs to bring back home. We don’t take them into the parks simply for the convenience of not having something else to keep up with. Having said that, I like the idea of getting a “to go” drink from a park restaurant when finishing the meal.

That’s a plus….never thought of taking the mug over to Port Orleans French Quarter from Riverside. They have a fun pool and I think we are allowed to use it if staying at POR. ;)

Following up on this….we decided NOT to purchase the refillable mugs. Instead, we bought a gallon of spring water from the gift shop and kept it in our room. I washed out a couple of plastic Starbucks cups to use at the pool. When we purchased food, we always asked for a complimentary water cup. Sometimes they gave us large cups…sometimes small. We paid for coffee in the mornings.

It really depends on how much time you spend outside of the parks. If you’r like me and stay at the park from rope drop until closing It’s not worth it

Does anyone mind sharing a photo of what these mugs look like? Honestly that’s what usually ends up being the make or break decision for me. If I like the mug a lot and know for sure I will use it when I get home, I’ll pay the extra $$ for it (and because I know between myself and J, we will be refilling it enough to get our moneys worth).

@bexruns, here you go. I don’t think they’ve changed the design since this article.

Thanks Scott! They look very similar to the souvenir coffee/hot cocoa mugs. I saw they don’t have a handle anymore though? Ugh. That’s one of the things I like about them is I could clip it to my bag or something so I don’t have to physically hold it.

I don’t think the no handles lasted very long. I can’t remember if you can choose handle or no handle now, but they did bring the handles back. This was the best article I could find to show you pictures of them.

@bexruns, they did have handles when I was there in late May/early June. They had done away with the handles a while before that, but they got a lot of backlash about it so they brought the cups with handles back! For a while there they had both – cups with and without handles, but I don’t know if that’s still the case.

This is what I was imagining it looking like. These aren’t rapid refill, but it seems like it’s the same.
