Here’s the sitch: My wife and I are bringing a friend of ours along with us on our next trip in August (not that we like heat and crowds, but when your wife’s a teacher, what can you do, right?) She is around 40 years old and hasn’t been to WDW since she was 10 (so not technically a first timer, but it’s been a very long time so she might as well be and she’s super excited about the trip ). Naturally we want this to be an adventurous and fun experience for her so we’re going to try to book some of the best places around WDW for dining as a first timer. We’re going for special all around – unique theme, good food, diversity of cuisine, and diversity of location.
We’re staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge. Our friend is not a picky eater and neither are we, but we’re trying to avoid Asian cuisine just because we’ve all experienced the best of the best and the most authentic in that arena. We also want to avoid Signature locations, but if you have a suggestion in that arena that is too good not to mention, then give it to me. Here’s what we’re pondering so far, but feel free to steer us in a different direction if you like:
Magic Kingdom: Lunch at Be Our Guest (maybe lunch at the Skipper’s Canteen as a backup)
Epcot: We’ve tossed around several good ideas, but haven’t been able to narrow it down
Hollywood Studios: Lunch at Sci-Fi (maybe 50s Prime Time as a backup)
Animal Kingdom: skipping in favor of something at the Animal Kingdom Resort
Resorts: Boma Dinner or Sanaa Lunch at Animal Kingdom Resort and a Breakfast at Kona Cafe at the PolyWhat do yinz (that’s western PA for “you all”) think?
EDIT: We are also not constrained by a dining plan.
December 16, 2016 at 8:18 pm #4195Here are a few restaurants that we frequent while in the World….
50’s prime time
Ohana’s
Yachtsman Steak House
Brown Derby
Flame Tree Barbecue
Earl of Sandwich
Whispering CanyonHope this helps
December 17, 2016 at 12:18 am #4203For HS, I think either choice is safe but I’ve heard 50s food is much better (haven’t done scifi so I can’t compare)
We’ve done Boma and it was good but not everyone likes buffets…then I’d go Jiko (which I hear is amazing)
At poly you can go to captain cooks for breakfast, still get Tonga toast and it is half the price
Be Our Guest was good at MK and I agree with 85glht…if you eat at AK, just do Flame TreeEPCOT…I’m a Sunshine Seasons girl
Yachtsman, California grill (during fireworks) and citricos are on my someday list.
If you haven’t done Hoop De Doo, seriously consider it. It is dinner and a show where the food is actually good.
December 18, 2016 at 2:47 pm #4246MK your choices are solid
HS 50s before SCI-FI and maybe Mama Melrose over SCI-FI depending on what your looking for
AKL also solid choices
EPCOT is tougher, lots of really good WS option id go almost as far to say tough to go wrong with table service in WS, FW is a little easier with basically Coral Reef and Garden Grill for table service
Your resort options look good to. We also like Cape May, Whispering Canyon, and Ohana.December 18, 2016 at 5:18 pm #4247Great post and ideas everybody.
Here have been some of our favs:
MK – Be Our Guest (lunch is quick serve, dinner is sit-down)
AK – Jiko for lodge, Yak & Yeti for park.
DHS – Sci-Fi
Epcot – Tokyo Dining or La Hacienda for window view Illuminations
Diz Sprgs – Morimoto
Poly – Ohana
Wilderness – Artist Point
Grand FL – Narcoossee’s
SwanFin – Blue ZooDecember 18, 2016 at 6:14 pm #4251I forgot Morimoto! Very good.
December 19, 2016 at 8:36 am #4273For a first timer you definitely want good food and unique experiences.
MK – That has some of my least favorite in park dining, but the wow factor of walking into BOG is something that just can’t be replicated. I’ve been pleased with my food there, never wow’d though. The atmosphere does make up for a lot though. If you have time, I might considering hopping on the monorail and heading over to Kona Cafe in the Poly or the Wave in the Contemporary.
AK – My husband loves Yak and Yeti, and Sanaa is an absolute must do for us every trip. The combination of the bread service, some unique drink options, and the animal viewing makes it such a wonderful experience.
HS – We just did Sci-Fi for the first time last trip and we loved it! I got a turkey sandwich, and again, it’s not going to knock your socks off, but the atmosphere was so unique and fun. I could have sat there all night watching the screen.
Epcot – If you’re looking for something fun and unique, Biergarten is a ton of fun. For QS I agree that Sunshine Seasons is great!
Disney Springs – I haven’t dined at Morimoto (it’s definitely on my list!), but have been to Frontera and Homecoming and really enjoyed them both. I am a sucker for Mexican food and a good margarita, so I’d have to give the edge to Frontera. I still think about the mashed potatoes and the pecan bar, they were that good!
Resorts – It’s nothing fancy, but Beaches and Cream has become a family favorite. The atmosphere there is great, and I do love their grilled cheese and tomato soup.
December 19, 2016 at 8:51 am #4276I would say it all depends on what your looking for. If price is no option, type of food, time, etc. If its something more intiment you seek then definatly artist point! much Quieter and amazng food. The newer Italian joint on the Boardwalk is ok also. But for everyday noramal eateries I could not go a trip without either a Kona breakfast or an Ohana meal! I’ve never had a bad meal at coral reef or Le Celier for that matter either. We did try some of the new places at the springs and was not impressed with blaze or deluxe burger. But there is so many new choices down there! I know you said no asian food but the sit down yak and yeti is fantastic! I agree with the pick for mexico. The one inside the pyrimid. Off the beeten path I highly recomend two places at fort wilderness! The hoopty doo revue is a must see show and the food is incredible! Plus beer is included!! and the trails end buffet also has a great spread of diffefrent foods. No matter what you pick you cant really go wrong! But as A templer knight once said…..”choose wisely”
December 19, 2016 at 10:02 am #4287Thanks folks for all of your opinions and for raising options I had not previously considered. This will be my 17th trip to WDW, and dining out at Disney has always been a special part of the trip for me and I hope to extend that to our “first timer”. If anyone’s reading this and hasn’t chimed in yet, please feel free to do so. I’ll be booking our restaurants in early February for our trip, so there’s still plenty of time to switch things up.
For now, still considering a Be Our Guest lunch at MK mostly for the atmosphere (though the food has been pretty good too in my past visits).
At Epcot, again for atmosphere, I like the ideas of Biergarten, Coral Reef, and San Angel Inn, though the Biergarten I confess is my heavy favorite for the food (I’m half German).
I’m leaning toward Sanaa near the AK area. I have only dined there once, and was considering it again, but had not fully thought out how much my wife and I really enjoyed our experience there til Kelly brought it up.
As for everything else, I had not even given Disney Springs a first thought, so thanks for putting those places on my radar!
Quick Service wise, I agree with many of you that Sunshine Seasons is practically a must.
Thanks again for all your food for thought (pun intended)! I’ve been around the block quite a bit with Disney dining, but things change over the years and it’s nice to hear about how restaurants I’ve not gone to in a while – or ever – are doing.
I think BoG Lunch and Kona Breakfast are our only definites for now. I know my wife will give me the “look” if I don’t book Kona.
December 19, 2016 at 10:11 am #4290Yeah man becareful. You don’t want to get that dreaded look!! I know the one you mention. It cuts through you like a hot knife through butter.
December 19, 2016 at 11:01 am #4293i think it is great that you are making all these reservations. my hubby likes to eat but doesn’t like having all these reservations to work around and he does not like the cost of some of these restaurants! i get the look if i schedule more than two for our trip
by the way, my kids have requested we go to Hoop De Doo AGAIN. So my two will probably be Sci Fi (cuz we have to do something different) and then I’ll give in and we’ll do a big bucket of fried chicken.
December 19, 2016 at 11:02 am #4294I don’t get a look, I get him asking while we are driving down for our trip “Hey, did you book that place I like? You know, with that thing I like?”
December 19, 2016 at 11:05 am #4295Nice KC. my hubby pays no attention and a week before we leave says “so what’s the plan?” i show him and he says things like “do we really want to go to MK that day?” UMMMMM…a bit late to change my fast passes dear!!!
December 19, 2016 at 11:27 am #4298Yeah…I love planning these things. Sometimes I plan for other people even though I’m not going (but I always offer that if they pay my expenses, I’ll be their tour guide for free No one’s taken me up on that yet.)
We love to dine out once a day on our trip, but if the restaurant serves the same stuff at lunch as it does dinner, I try to book lunch since it’s usually a good time to take a break anyway. If not, I’ll book an early dinner so we eat out at the end of our afternoon break. We don’t like to have to stop the fun for reservations, but we always want that afternoon break, so scheduling ADRs around those breaks has been very non-intrusive and convenient.
December 20, 2016 at 12:45 pm #4378I’m late to the party, but here’s my offering…
Once again I’ll suggest the Fantasmic Dining Package at Hollywood Brown Derby. It’s cheaper than eating a 3 course meal there and the only restriction you have is on your dessert. Plus you get VIP tickets to Fantasmic, which saves you time staking out your seats. Only downside is you will not get your money back if the show is cancelled. But I know they try everything they can not to cancel a show. We loved our food (we do every time, get the Cobb salad for sure!) and the atmosphere is so old school Hollywood I love it.
I can’t comment on some of your suggestions as I haven’t been to BOG, Sanaa or Boma, but I love Sci-Fi, I think that’s a great choice! Like Kelly said, the food is got but not incredible, you go for the atmosphere which is really fun! Be sure to request a car when you check in, it’s worth the wait if you have to.
Epcot – I read that Food & Wine will start in August next year, depending on when you’re going you might be able to catch it. We realized that we would rather eat around the world during Food & Wine than have a table service meal. Sure it can be a little more expensive, depending on which TS you would have chosen, and which F&W countries you visit, but it’s worth it to me. You can’t do F&W all year round and some of that food is incredible! So that could be another option for y’all
Downtown Disney – I haven’t been to Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar but that would be my pick, it looks fun! You could also take a boat from there over to Old Key West and check out Olivia’s Cafe. They have Key West/Caribbean offerings and it’s pretty good
