I saw a post last night on FB from someone who attended the July 4th fireworks at MK and posted photos of all the junk guests left on the ground (even diapers!!) once the show was over, that makes me so angry! Such disrespect for the park, other guests, the CMs.
I have a friend who I visited WDW many times with, who used to be a boy scout and would pick up random trash left in queues and drop it in the next trash bin. He would say, leave the place cleaner than when you found it. I then started to do the same thing, if I saw trash, instead of leaving it there, I would pick it up and throw it in the trash. It seems to be getting worse in the parks, I have noticed on my last visit it wasn’t as tidy as it used to be, I thought it was because they were cutting back on maintenance due to the overseas parks having a tougher time but I think it’s the guests, the kind of guest perhaps?
Someone mentioned “what kind of Disney fans are these?” I replied, they aren’t Disney fans, if they were, they would NOT do this.
People were posting seeing rude guests throwing trash on HM and Pirates. Water bottles and such. What!?! I don’t know how I would react if I saw this happening. It upsets me when someone uses flash photography on a ride, littering is worse!
Someone else mentioned that in the recent years, a different kind of guest has been attending the parks, not sure exactly what they meant by different but maybe, “entitled” guests, thinking I spent all this money so let me do what the heck I want. So upsetting.
What can WE do to help change this ugly behavior? All I can think of is picking up the random trash if it’s right there by me and throwing it in the trash or recycling bin. Any suggestions? :'(
July 5, 2017 at 8:19 am #36874I have a feeling it’s foreigners.
My dad was working July 3 (thankfully not the 4th!) and he said most of the people leaving the MK after the fireworks were mainly Hispanic and Spanish speaking. Knowing that these are also tourists, their culture is much different than us Americans and Canadians. We are more sophisticated. :'(
No offense to anyone of the previously mentioned heritages.
July 5, 2017 at 8:53 am #36880Having been to some 2nd and 3rd world countries I can affirm that in those cultures I’ve visited, throwing garbage on the street is commonplace, but then trash cans are few and far between usually. But I can also say I’ve seen it from 1st world citizens too with a perfectly good trash can within a few short steps. Makes me sad :'( Entitlement is probably a big part of it.
Being an Eagle Scout, leaving a place cleaner than I found it is hard-wired into my thinking like your friend @stupidjudy . It upsets me a lot when Disney has trash cans everywhere and people can’t find it in themselves to throw away their trash.
July 5, 2017 at 8:54 am #36881Not to mention Disney has trash cans about every 30 steps

If I saw it happening, I would have no issue calling out the guest. Or alerting a CM if I couldn’t talk directly to the guest, e.g. if they’re ahead of me in line.

Agreed that in other countries, it’s considered normal to throw stuff on the ground (in some countries spitting is considered normal, so gross!) anyway, even at counter services restaurants we always leave a clean table behind us, so many times I have seen families get up from the table and leave the place a giant mess!
July 5, 2017 at 9:11 am #36888Sad to say that there are people who think only of themselves. I see this with trash–also with phones and ipads that block the view of other guests. So sad that they also reinforce this behavior in their children. I would never think of speaking loudly to someone beside of me in a movie while others are trying to experience an attraction. My husband and I passed by a just vacated table in a restaurant. The floor was completely littered where a child had eaten. It was awful. We both looked at each other like “unbelievable”. I would be embarrassed to leave that for cleanup for restaurant staff. It left me wondering if they do that at home. So much rudeness. Sadly, it’s impossible to correct their behavior.
July 5, 2017 at 9:14 am #36890Exactly, I doubt they do that at home! So rude! Like you said @piglet54, so many inconsiderate guests all over the place.
July 5, 2017 at 9:37 am #36897This also bothers me very much. I have seen trash cans overflowing specifically at Epcot in the World Showcase, and also in the Magic Kingdom… where water bottles are literally falling out onto the ground. I’m wondering if I experienced a time at WDW where there was a shortage of Janitor CM’s?
I am shocked about the Diapers being left on the ground @stupidjudy … that is very unsanitary!
As for a solution… I think the next time I see something such as this, I will go to Guest Relations and let them know about the overflowing trashcans and / or litter. I’m sure that they would take the complaints to heart and get it taken care of right away.
@RocketEar99 my husband was also an Eagle Scout You Eagle Scouts are the ‘good guys’July 5, 2017 at 9:43 am #36898@Acamm Cool! Pass on my scout salute to him!
July 5, 2017 at 9:44 am #36899That’s a good idea @acamm, letting Guest Services know about the overflowing trash. It’s worth a shot!
I think also with all the various Festivals happening at Epcot now, food booths = extra trash, that could explain why it seems worse.
Water bottles are a problem allover the world, I wonder if they could come up with a solution for that.
July 5, 2017 at 10:54 am #36919Absolutely disgusting. I’m disgusted by what those people did to our home, I’m disgusted by what those people caused for the cast members to clean up, I’m disgusted by their flippant attitudes of “I don’t have to clean it up so I’m just going to throw this down”, and I’m disgusted by their lack of respect to someone else’s property and fellow guests. I accept no excuse for this barbaric behavior.
As said above, there’s a trash can every 30 steps. Throw your crap away people!
July 5, 2017 at 11:57 am #36957I will never ever understand people leaving their trash anywhere besides a trash can. I come home many days to see beer cans or food bags in my ditch on yard. Some people are just disgusting. I’ve never really seen a problem at WDW, but I guess I put on rose-colored-glasses there. I’ve always thought it was clean, but we do go at a non-peak time of year. I can bet in the summer it’s not so clean. People have no respect. I have always said that if I catch the people that are throwing trash in my yard I’m going to pack it all up and take it to their house and see how they like it.
July 5, 2017 at 2:03 pm #36976I don’t see a lot of trash at the parks other than right after a parade or fireworks show. I think when people are moving, they put it in a trashcan. Do you think, maybe (hopefully) people are sitting there waiting for it to start while snacking, they set their trash down to pick up at the end (because you can’t leave your spot or you will lose it) and by the time they are ready to throw it away, the crowd has shifted them away from their trash, they have forgotten about it, or it has blown off somewhere? I don’t usually see trash being thrown about other than the parades and fireworks so I am hoping there is an explanation and that it isn’t a trend we will start seeing everywhere all the time.
But I may be giving too much benefit of the doubt and they are just being inconsiderate pigs.
July 5, 2017 at 2:35 pm #36982I don’t know @Ferg, you might be too nice.
I see what you are saying, perhaps that is what happens, it’s dark, it’s packed, you can’t bend down when the crowd starts moving because you’ll get trampled. Okay. Maybe. But that does not excuse the litter found in queues for example. They always have a trash can before you get on a ride with a CM nearby checking to make sure nobody is going on rides with food or drinks that aren’t bottles so there is no excuse to just leave it in the queue.
I just read that the post in question on FB got so much attention and got all us fans really worked up, so who knows, maybe this will help things to change !
