I will most definitely miss the Great Movie Ride and also Ellen’s Energy Adventure. What will I miss most ? Well….
The Great Movie Ride: I loved MGM Studios in the 90’s, and The Great Movie Ride really was the epitome of what the theme park was originally modeled around – Classic Hollywood! I love the animatronics, and the campy ride vehicle hosts, and also the film montage at the end of the ride. I mean… who else wasn’t completely blown away the first time that you went into Oz and heard the munchkins singing?!! Wasn’t that a cool surprise?
Universe of Energy: While I know that Ellen’s Energy Adventure is very long, and quite boring… it will always hold a dear place in my heart because it was my 14 year old son’s favorite ride when he was 3 1/2. I can remember riding this thing over, and over, and over again with him so that he could see the dinosaurs He still absolutely loves EEE, and still actually says its in his top 3 rides in all of WDW. So yeah, I’m going to miss it because of the amazing memories that I made there with my son
August 12, 2017 at 10:29 am #44189I will miss Great Movie Ride. I rode Ellen as a child before it was Ellen’s Energy and just Universe of Energy so I have less nostalgia there. But Great Movie Ride has been mostly consistent. I love the kidnapping by gangster or cowboy interaction. I also LOVE the great movie scenes at the end.
August 12, 2017 at 8:45 pm #44222The Great Movie ride was always a must do for our family. When my son was about 6 he was fortunate enough to be in the front seat when the gangster took over. I will never forget his face when the gangster looked right at him and asked “what are you looking at kid?” He talked about that all day after that and we always laugh now even though he is 19. There are so many memories with the retired attractions and new ones just waiting for the newbies.
Thank you Great Movie Ride!August 14, 2017 at 11:01 am #44334The great movie ride was one of my favorite rides at WDW. It allowed the movies to take you through time. I remember watching majority of the movies growing up as a kid. Every sunday we had a local channel that would play classic movies. Now I still get to catch them on TMC. It will surely be missed.
August 17, 2017 at 10:49 am #44745I loved the GMR back in high school like 20 years ago…but the last few trips I have skipped it. The acting from the people running the ride was so bad and the lack of updates to include some more recent and famous movies made it not worth the wait. Although now that it is gone, I wish I would have forced the family to go on it in June. Go figure. I did see online that they let the last group on UoE get off and take pictures of the dinos. SO jealous!!!
August 17, 2017 at 4:47 pm #44774I will miss both of these attractions! I didn’t always appreciate them or what they had to offer in my younger days. But once we started really taking our time at the parks to enjoy all that they had to offer, we really appreciated both of these!
I always had this vague memory from childhood about dinosaurs at WDW but I didn’t know what the ride was. I honestly thought I had dreamed it. That was until my hubby and I went to WDW together on one of our first trips together there in 2009 or 2010. We needed a break while walking around EPCOT and we were near Ellen’s. I had honestly forgotten that it was a 45 minute attraction and actually chuckled when they gave the spiel reminding you to use the restroom ahead of time. My hubby has always been a huge dinosaur fan, shoot, he wanted to be a paleontologist when he was a kid! So he thought it was pretty cool! Somehow those plastic seats are comfy! We would often use this attraction as an afternoon break from the heat or cold and just relaxed. Sometimes my hubby would nap, sometimes he wouldn’t. But we started incorporating in our must do’s on nearly every trip since then.
With Great Movie Ride, we did this on our first trips together and then skipped it for a bit because we honestly just weren’t spending much time in Hollywood Studios. But over the past year or so, we’ve ridden it on every single trip. It was a great break! But I loved all of the scenes during the ride and really loved the movie clips at the end! I do remember from my younger days how much the Alien scared me!!!! It’s funny because I didn’t know until a couple of years ago that there were two scene options! I had always gotten Gangster!! I also didn’t know that you could request a scene! So the 1st and only time we got the Cowboy scene was on our final ride in April! Sort of fitting, I suppose! And that’s a wrap folks!
August 17, 2017 at 5:42 pm #44778I saw this thread while I was on vacation but had only my phone so I didn’t try to type out a response. A little late but I think I beat @steve’s deadline.
What I will miss most about both rides are the unique elements. With the Great Movie Ride it is the cast members appearing in the set and hijacking the car, For Elen’s it is the really cool ride system I only rode it once because it was closed one each of my other 9 trips to the world. When I did ride it I kept thinking how the system could be used for a really interesting ride at least before I dozed off.
The theming in the queue and building of GMR was pretty cool too.
Thanks Steve and Chelle for the contest and upcoming live stream
August 18, 2017 at 9:20 am #44838I will miss being able to sit for a while whilst being entertained and enjoying some nice cool air conditioning. Laying on the floor watching the U of E preshow (back when they let you sprawl out all over the carpeted floor). Did I mention the nice cool air conditioning? Watching the film clips during the GMR preshow and walking through the hollywood museum whilst in the quueueueueueueueueueu.. The real life dinos during the U of E ride. Did I mention the nice cool air conditioning?

Yes! I never thought about this but you’re right. I was always amazed by the cars in these rides and how when I was a child it was so impressive that they moved by themselves but didn’t have a track. I would really feel like I was back with the dinosaurs because you were there in your car without a CM. It was really immersive to me.
I will also miss being yelled at by Ellen for being late. I promise to think about that next time!
