Do you do “Countdown Calendars” in anticipation of your Disney trips? What are some of your favorite ideas?
I’ve done a couple rather complicated (but FUN!) ones in the past so, I’m especially interested in simple ideas that are a little more fun than X-ing days on the kitchen calendar with a sharpie.
April 12, 2017 at 9:27 am #22107Oh heck yes. I have a countdown app on my phone to all upcoming events (I mention a lot of them here too since some of them are fairly important to me), I cross out dates on my calendar and I post them here too.
April 12, 2017 at 9:51 am #22126I do have a countdown app on my phone. I’m thinking more in terms of something I might make for my daughter (almost 10) and nieces (15 and 17). I did put the countdown app on all three of their phones, too, so maybe I am being a little over-ambitious.
I made a pretty elaborate countdown last time we and my sister’s family traveled to WDW together (2013). It was a first visit for my sister and her girls so, I included a bit of WDW info/trivia and a trading pin for each countdown day. They have asked me if I would be making them a countdown again. I said “no” because it was a lot of work and, the one I made for my daughter in 2015 was largely forgotten about in our house.
But, if I came up with something fairly simple, I think the girls would enjoy it.

April 12, 2017 at 10:41 am #22152I’ve done this: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/AZ6rhtelY6bnQsEyzOdkm8Mh_PrpPxCpgLcIYwwD_9j-26TNOiulQ3A/ but it didn’t look as amazing as that!
I also have a countdown app on my phone, but more recently I bought one of these: https://www.etsy.com/listing/231816554/disney-inspired-countdown-board?ref=shop_home_active_27 and that’s what I use
April 18, 2017 at 11:20 am #22834Trolling the forums today and I realized that I meant to post pictures of my previous countdowns here and never did.
These are from my daughter’s first WDW trip when she was 4. Each “day” was an envelope with 3 or 4 puzzle pieces in it.
April 18, 2017 at 11:32 am #22835Wow! That’s incredible!
April 18, 2017 at 11:35 am #22836I love this @connie96! How creative and fun! Two for that!
April 18, 2017 at 11:39 am #22837Aww, thanks. My thought process was that there oughta be a “payoff” each day. Just “X”ing days or pulling off a number seemed too boring to me.
But, I’m kinda over it at the moment because these suckers take more work than is sensible. And, for our most recent trip, 2 years ago, my daughter and I both would just forget about the thing for days at a time. I think we may have out-grown countdowns as “fun” as this one.
April 18, 2017 at 11:49 am #22840@connie96 you are a rock star. all i did was the paper rings in red-white-black-yellow this time. although i’ve never done a countdown before and the kids rather like it. i enjoy the kids not saying “Alexa, how many days until June 1st” every morning.
April 18, 2017 at 11:58 am #22841The paper rings are really cute!
I wasn’t really planning on doing one at all this time around but, my nieces were bummed when I told them that. We’re still 100+ days out so, I have some time to think.
April 18, 2017 at 11:58 am #22842That’s pretty awesome!
Aside from just the countdown app on my phone, I never did anything huge with my kids. I really just surprised them and we’d just magically arrive at Disneyland.
April 18, 2017 at 12:02 pm #22845@imarebelpilot, I’d love to “magically arrive” but, I also love the anticipation stage of the trip. If there were going to be a surprise Disney trip in our family, someone would have to surprise ME. Having me in on it would almost certainly lead to surprise spoilage.
