I dont wish to belabor the issues so this will be my last post on this.
Im a bit hesitant to judge harshly without knowing all the info. Like you said, “state of the world right now”. Maybe part of the world being in this “state” is our premature judgment with only the bit of information we need to support our personal perceptions.
That being said, I TOTALLY agree with you on the tip. One accepts the employment knowing the compensatory processes and what is required to meet that compensation. Tip is a gratuity, not a right of compensation or entitlement and as an expression of gratitude, I am not grateful for bad service. Tipping poor service perpetuates poor service. Not only will I not tip, I will also inform the manager. I do this because the manager knows if they are short staff. They can find out if the host(ess) dropped too many downs, or if the kitchen screwed up he orders (which the server can be blamed for). Or, they know if this is a continuing performance issue and can address it.
Like I said in my article on working at Disney, we all spend a lot of hard earned cash to go. We have incredibly high expectations for the amount it costs for the experience. We as a guest sometimes need to temper our expectations, and!!!! when the service is at that level that creates magic for us, we MUST communicate to those in charge. I am a firm believer in, “If you complain, you must also commend.”
Without this sort of communication, improvement cannot occur or be supported.

It makes you wonder how much longer any really busy business can carry on. It seems like the younger generation doesn’t have the same work drive. I know at my salon, we hired an assistant, right out of school to shampoo hair and fold towels for $8 cash an hour plus each stylist paid her $2 per shampoo PLUS tips from the clients and she stayed one week and just didn’t show up again. No call, no thank you but no. Nothing. She was 24. That’s not how you start out your career! By getting a reputation for being unreliable? I couldn’t get over it. So yeah, with that kind of mentality going around, I wonder how many people at Disney start the job and just don’t bother showing up? I think they are probably lucky in that most people feel honored to be able to work there, but you’ll always have your fly by night people.
